Editorial review

Any thoughtful user has an antiviral tool installed on his computer. However, in some cases you have to work with someone else's machines, so having a decent antivirus on an external device would be a smart idea. Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper is a powerful portable tool that you can carry on an CD, DVD, or your USB drive wherever you go.

The program is pretty lightweight - about 250MB. All you need to do to activate it is install the program from CD/DVD or USB drive on the computer and let the program download some additional components from the Internet. Thus, make sure that the machine is connected to the Internet and that the connection is stable. During the testing, Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper appeared to be quite tricky to install. It can take some time, so get ready for that.

The program works with viruses, Trojans, rootkits, and other threats that can cause problems with the system. However, note that it's not a full-fledged antivirus. It is not as powerful as other versatile programs and is more like an emergency tool. It will help you remove critical threats but it's not the best option for everyday use.

How it works

Once the bootable CD/DVD or USB drive is created and the program is installed, run the scan to detect any malicious elements on your computer. If any are detected, the program does a good job on removing them and bringing the system back to life. The scan can take a while though, so get ready for a lengthy process.
