Editorial review

Microsoft Security Essentials is an official security tool released by Microsoft. It protects your system from all types of threats. You can use it on a regular basis to keep your computer clean and launch it in emergency situations when the system has already been infected.

How it works

Similarly to the majority of antiviruses, Microsoft Security Essentials offers 3 scan options: full, quick, and custom scans. Upon your first scanning session, it is recommended to perform a full scan: it takes a while but helps you detect any threats on your computer.

You can schedule routine scans and allow the program to inspect the system every once in a while to make sure it's safe.

There is a system restore option that can bring your system back in time and cancels some unwanted changes.

The program has 4 main sections: the first one displays your security status; the second one stands for updates; the third section shows you the history; and the last one deals with the settings.

Interface

The interface is very simple and clear, which makes this program perfect for novice users. You can install it on your grandma's machine and prevent her panic attacks caused by loads of unfamiliar notifications, popup windows and tabs, but it probably won't be powerful enough for advanced users.

Flaws

The program appears to be too basic and it lacks certain options that you expect to find in a decent security tool. Finally, the program is not really attractive and analysis is not very detailed.
