Editorial review

LMMS (Linux Multimedia Studio) is a decent music making utility, and don't let the name deceit you: it works perfectly on Windows. The program offers a number of effective tools for making music from scratch.

Overview

LMMS combines a music maker, mixer and editor within the same interface. You can select premade loops and beats, configure them, and even record your own ones. There is a large library of effects that you can add to your songs. Finally, you can import two different tracks, adjust their BPMs and create custom mixes.

The program is compatible with MIDI keyboards that give you more freedom with making music. Just plug it in, record custom samples and add them to your songs.

Interface

The interface seems to be quite overwhelming for novice users and they may find all these menus and tabs quite tricky. You will need some time to familiarize yourself with the program but the complexity is explained by a large number of features that this application offers. In general, it's perfectly logical and smart. If you are stuck figuring out all those options, you can check the Help section to find the answers to your questions. It's really helpful and detailed so don't skip it in case it's your first time using this application.

Additional possibilities

The program is pretty powerful but you can make it even more sophisticated by installing additional plugins. Additional drum loops and samples will expand your possibilities and allow you to create awesome compositions from scratch.
